CHISEL was a community housing association based in Southeast London. The association was set up by a number of independent housing co-operatives that wished to provide themselves with development, management and training services. CHISEL developed the range of housing options for member co-operatives, including short-life, rehabilitation of older homes, new build and self-build homes, primarily through the co-operative model.
Key Project:
Co-operative Self-Build from Rent
José Ospina worked with the Housing Corporation (UK) and others to develop a new legal and financial model for Self-Build for Rent. This Model allowed for persons without any existing capital to participate in self-build projects where they would hold an equity share while renting at an affordable rent. The homes were also designed to solar and sustainable building principles. Around 100 were built and are in use.
