José carried out a postgraduate Research at the IAAS from 1985 to 86. This was done as part of the MA Course in Third World Studies led by Charles Cockburn. The research was developed over a period of one year, based at the Institute, and involved a comparative study of residents participation in housing in the United Kingdom and Colombia, being based partly on his direct experience to date.

Housing Ourselves
On the basis of the research carried out, Hilary Shipman Ltd (London) in 1987 published the book Housing Ourselves, dealing with self-help and participation in housing in the United Kingdom and Colombia. This book is currently available form Amazon.
